Wire cut

I looked out the window early this morning and observed that some of the wire I had dangling off the balcony had been cut. I suspect it was done by the building gardener who didn't realize what  he had done..

So it was impossible to tune on 30 meters any longer.

But I did manage to tune up on 17 meters.  Worked DX-expedition 5X8C in Uganda. Three watts to, perhaps, 8 meters of  random wire. The other operator had great hearing ability.

So when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Happy Valentine Day. Take your significant other to lunch

15/02/13 I heard 5X8C calling CQ again with no immediate replies. Signal weaker than the last time. Called him and after a call sign repeat he responded. As on the previous occasion, I had called CQ with no replies and nothing on the reverse beacon.  17 meters CW. So because you don't find your call on the reverse beacon, it doesn't mean that you aren't heard, somewhere.

  1. Hello Dick, what a wonderful experience. This small antenna works. You take this experience with you. Thanks for this great Blog entry.
I once worked JA from TA, with 1 watt, on a wire of 6 mtrs, just 15 cm from the wall, on the first floor of a building, completely surrounded by higher buildings. I had to give my call more than 10 times. From that point on, I knew that ANY antenna can work, sometimes with much more patience.
You confinced yourself that small antenna's can work. FB. 73, Bert

  2. Hi Dick, that's a nice catch, I did heard him but never tried to contact him. I hope you can fix the wire. It is something I am afraid for. One of the dipole wires is outside my yard. When they come for cutting branches it could happen to me as well. 73 Paul

  3. Hi Bert and Paul. Thanks for your comments. I found a second Buddistick counterpoise I brought with me down here. Ran it around the small balcony with a few meters over the side and tuned it to 20 meters. Worked 4Z5AD in Israel. No great distance but satisfied, nevertheless. To repeat the wire is my only antenna, no buddistick here.

I hope the Russians ate desert first before the meteor fragments hit, hi.

  4. Hello Dick, on holiday I always use a wire antenna. I recommend to use a 300 ohm ribbon to feed the antenna, like a Zepp, to avoid a "difficult ground system". I made hundreds of QSO's this way, on "many" holidays.

And wonder, Bert is it really that easy? GL, 73, Bert
